solar • meta lead tracking
Solar Leads and the Meta Conversions API
Solar has one of the longest sales cycles of any home service, so the most useful thing to send Meta is an early but serious step, such as a consultation attended or a site survey booked, rather than the final signed contract. I set up those early quality events plus the later contract event, so Meta gets a fast signal and you get an honest record of which ads produced installed systems.
01 • the solar sales cycle
Why is tracking solar leads harder than other home services?
A solar sale often involves a first call, a consultation, a site survey, a design and proposal, a financing decision and then the contract. Several people in the household may be involved, and many homeowners take their time. That means the sale often lands long after the original ad click.

02 • the quality event
Which stage should solar companies send as the quality event?
Meta's Conversions API for CRM guidance asks for a target stage reached within 28 days of the lead, converting between 1% and 40% of leads. For solar, 'consultation attended' or 'site survey booked' usually fits. 'Contract signed' often comes too late to be the optimisation target.
| Stage | Timing | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Consultation attended | Usually days | Strong quality signal |
| Site survey booked | Usually within weeks | Strong quality signal |
| Proposal presented | Varies | Useful for reporting |
| Contract signed | Often longer than 28 days | Report it with value; rarely the optimisation target |
Timing rule worth knowing
Meta's server event documentation says each event's time can be at most 7 days before you send it. A contract signed months after the click can still be sent, as long as you send it within 7 days of signing.
03 • lead quality
Why do solar ads attract so many unqualified leads?
- Renters, apartment dwellers and people with unsuitable roofs fill in forms too.
- Incentive-led ads attract people who are curious about savings but not ready to buy.
- Very short instant forms make it easy to submit without thinking.
Asking one or two qualifying questions on the form (owns the home? roughly what monthly power bill?) and sending 'qualified' as a stage gives Meta something better to learn from than raw form fills. See Facebook lead ads vs landing pages for the trade-offs.
04 • the form
What should a solar lead form ask?
- Name, phone, email and address
- Do you own the home?
- Roof type or roof age, if known
- Roughly how much is your monthly electricity bill?
- Are you interested in paying outright, financing or not sure?
The address lets your team check the roof and the service area before calling. The bill question gives a quick sense of whether solar makes sense for the household. Neither needs to be perfect; the point is to spot obvious mismatches before a consultant spends an hour on them.
05 • reporting
How should solar companies report on long sales cycles?
Ads Manager credits results inside an attribution window that is much shorter than a typical solar sale. So keep your own CRM report by lead source and month: how many leads from each campaign reached consultation, survey, proposal and signed, even months later. That report, not Ads Manager alone, tells you which campaigns really pay.
- 1Store the campaign and ad for every lead when it enters the CRM.
- 2Keep every lead's stage history, not just its current stage.
- 3Review signed contracts by original lead month, not by signing month.
06 • what i set up
What does a solar tracking setup include?
- Qualifying questions on forms, and a 'qualified' stage
- Consultation, survey and signed events sent from the CRM
- Campaign and ad stored on each lead for long-term reporting
- Deduplicated website Lead events (pixel + Conversions API)
- A monthly cohort report: leads by month and how far each got
If your ads promote loans or financing, check whether Meta's special ad category rules apply to them before launching.

questions
Frequently asked questions
01. Can I send a solar contract signed months after the click?
+
Yes, as long as you send it within 7 days of the signing date. Meta rejects events more than 7 days old.
02. What should solar ads optimise for?
+
Usually an early but serious stage, such as a consultation attended or a site survey booked, because the contract often comes too late.
03. Why are solar leads so mixed?
+
Renters, unsuitable roofs and curious browsers fill in forms too. Qualifying questions and a 'qualified' stage help.
04. Is Ads Manager enough for solar reporting?
+
Not on its own. Keep a CRM report by lead source and lead month to see sales that happen long after the click.
