The Best Weebly Alternative for Your Small Business

The best Weebly alternative depends on what your site does: Wix or Squarespace suit a simple site you want to edit yourself, Shopify suits a store that sells online every day, Square Online suits businesses already using Square, and a custom-built site suits a business that wants it done for them. If your site is a few pages and you enjoy doing it yourself, a DIY builder is often the better choice; this guide is honest about when that is true.

I build custom websites, so I have a bias. I have tried to be fair anyway. No links on this page earn me anything, and I have left out prices because they change and vary by country. Check each provider's own pricing page.

What should I look for in a Weebly alternative?

Weebly was easy. That is why people chose it. The risk is jumping to the next easy thing without asking whether it fits. Ask these questions first.

  • Does it work in my country, including taking payments?
  • Can I connect my own domain, and keep it separate from the platform?
  • Can I export my content if I ever need to leave? You have just learned why this matters.
  • Who will update it? You, a staff member, or someone you pay?
  • Does it do what my old site did: forms, booking, a shop, a blog?

02 • side by side

How do Wix, Squarespace, Shopify and Square Online compare?

OptionBest forWatch out for
WixA simple site you want to edit yourself, with lots of templatesIt is another closed builder. Moving away later means rebuilding again
SquarespaceClean, design-led sites for services, portfolios and small shopsAlso closed. Fewer layout options than Wix, by design
ShopifyStores that sell online every dayBuilt for shops. More than you need for a five-page service site
Square OnlineBusinesses already taking payments with SquareSquare only operates in a few countries. Check yours first
Custom-built siteOwners who want it done for them, built around how they win customersCosts more up front. Make sure you own the code and the domain

All of the builders let you connect your own domain. That matters more than any feature. Keep your domain at a registrar in your name, and you can change builders without losing your address. Here is how to move it off Weebly.

03 • the honest bit

When is a DIY builder the better choice?

Plenty of businesses do not need a custom site. A DIY builder is probably the better choice if most of these are true for you.

DIY is likely right if
  • Your site is a few pages: home, services, about, contact
  • Most customers find you through referrals, not Google
  • You like doing it yourself and have a spare weekend
  • Your budget is tight right now
  • You are fine rebuilding again if the platform changes

There is no shame in that. A clear, simple site you can update yourself beats an expensive one you never touch.

04 • and when it isn't

When is a custom-built website worth it?

A custom site makes sense when the website is part of how you earn money. For example, when most new customers find you on Google, when you sell in several areas, or when you need booking, quotes or a shop that fits the way you work.

It also makes sense if you never want this week again. A custom site built on standard code, with the domain in your name, can be moved to any host. Ask any builder or developer, including me, to put that in writing. If you have ever paid a web company monthly and wondered what you actually own, read rented website vs owning one.

05 • making the move

Can I migrate my Weebly site automatically?

Not fully. There is no button that turns a Weebly site into a Wix, Squarespace or Shopify site. Some hosts offer to move it for you, but what they move is mostly your content. The design, forms and widgets are rebuilt on the new platform.

  1. 1Save everything first. Download your Weebly website.
  2. 2Move your domain to your own registrar account. Domain guide.
  3. 3Choose your platform using the table above.
  4. 4Rebuild your key pages first: home, services, contact. Add the rest after.
  5. 5Point your domain to the new site and test every form.

questions

Frequently asked questions

01. What is the closest alternative to Weebly?

+

Wix and Squarespace feel the most similar: drag-and-drop editing, templates, hosting included. Both are closed platforms, like Weebly was.

02. Is Square Online the replacement for Weebly?

+

Square has pointed new sites towards Square Online. But it depends on Square's payment service, which only operates in a few countries. Check whether yours is one of them.

03. Should I choose Shopify if I only sell a few products?

+

Maybe not. Shopify is built for stores. If the shop is a small side part of your business, Wix, Squarespace or a simple custom site may suit you better.

04. Can I keep my Weebly design on a new platform?

+

Not directly. Designs are rebuilt. You can keep your text, images and domain, and ask for a similar look.

05. Which Weebly alternative is best for Google ranking?

+

No platform guarantees rankings. What matters most is keeping your domain, keeping your page topics, a fast mobile site, and clear pages for each service.
